*SPELLING / WORD STUDY ASSESSMENT*
Spelling is typically assessed on Fridays. At times, a spelling assessment may fall on a different day.
Spelling / Word Study Goal:
Students will also be assessed on spelling their words correctly when writing them in sentences and will receive a conventions grade.
Conventions Goal:
Please note, in order for a student to earn an exceeding score of (4) on a spelling assessment, they must spell all spelling words, applied phonics words, and challenge words correctly. In order for a student to earn an overall (4) exceeding on their report card, they must be consistently applying common spelling patterns correctly within words throughout all of their written assignments.

*MATH FACT FLUENCY*
Students are typically assessed most Fridays for five minutes on 100 mixed (addition and subtraction) facts within the sum of 20.

*UNWRAP READING COMPREHENSION*
One way students will be assessed on their reading comprehension is while using our UNWRAP strategy. This assessment often falls at the end of a week; however, it is an ongoing skill and an assessment may be given at anytime.
Students are assessed on how well they comprehend a 2nd grade reading passage. Students will read a passage and answer constructive response and multiple choice questions about what they have read, while using the UNWRAP strategy. The UNWRAP strategy assists students in reading closely and answering questions about the text.
U - Underline the title
N - Number the paragraph
W- Walk through (read) the questions
R - Read the passage
A - Answer the questions
P- Prove your answer

Please note: math, reading, language arts, writing assessment dates are not typically announced in advance, as they are assessed as the material is completed, based on the needs of the class, and on an on-going basis.
How to Prepare:
Please note that much of what your child is learning in class is hands-on and may not come home in the form of a worksheet or paper activity. - Learn to spell and use spelling patterns within words correctly when writing in isolation and within sentences. The spelling assessment will include some words that are on the weekly spelling list. It will also include words that are not on the weekly spelling list. For these words, students will apply the learned spelling patterns from the week to write new words.
Students will also be assessed on spelling their words correctly when writing them in sentences and will receive a conventions grade.

- Consistently uses correct capitalization when writing.
- Consistently uses correct punctuation when writing.
Please note, in order for a student to earn an exceeding score of (4) on a spelling assessment, they must spell all spelling words, applied phonics words, and challenge words correctly. In order for a student to earn an overall (4) exceeding on their report card, they must be consistently applying common spelling patterns correctly within words throughout all of their written assignments.
How to Prepare:
- Students should practice spelling the words and spelling patterns that they do not know from their weekly spelling/word study list each evening.
*MATH FACT FLUENCY*
Students are typically assessed most Fridays for five minutes on 100 mixed (addition and subtraction) facts within the sum of 20.
2nd Grade Fact Fluency Goal:
- Goal 1: Answer 85 facts correctly, within the sum and difference of 20, in 5 minutes by the end of the year. (Goal 1)
- Goal 2: (Exceeding): Answer 96 or more facts correctly, with the sum and difference of 20, in 5 minutes by the end of the year.
How to Prepare:
- Students should complete their 1 minute timed fact fluency homework Monday - Wednesday.
- Students should complete their 5 minute timed fact fluency homework on Thursday.
- Students may practice their fact fluency on XtraMath (login information and password is located in your child's binder).

- Answer questions about a passage using details and proof from the text.
How to Prepare:
- Students should read at their independent reading level each night at home.
- Complete nightly 1 minute reading fluency practice
- Students may practice their reading on our new reading program (login information and password will be located in your child's binder). Links about this program will be posted as it becomes available.
*READING FLUENCY AND READING LEXILE LEVEL*
Reading fluency monitoring is ongoing with benchmark assessments each nine weeks.
Reading Fluency Goal:
- Read 87 correct words per minute on an end of year 2nd grade passage by the end of the year.
Reading Lexile Goal
- Read on a 535 Lexile or higher by the end of 2nd grade (420 is considered proficient, 655+ is considered advanced).
How to Prepare:
- Students should read at home each evening for at least 20 minutes using at text at or around their Lexile level.
- Students should complete their 1 minute timed repeated reading passage each evening as assigned.
- Students may practice their reading skills on our new reading software program (to be announced) on Clever.

- Keep previous classwork/homework as a resource for review.
- Have student complete/practice all assigned homework.
- Have student read nightly and ask an adult or older child to ask questions about what they have read.
- Practice 2nd grade skills on recommended websites (XtraMath and Progress Learning).
